Wonderstone Rhyolite Pendant (The Stone of Self Esteem)
Description: This elongated teardrop shows off the awesome banding some Wonderstone slabs have. The source slab was from Nevada, in the United States, and it was a wonderful example of the tight banding you see on this pendant. It’s as if the banding wraps the entire pendant in a tight embrace. In my opinion, this is one of the premiere stones of the southwestern United States. I choose the elongated teardrop shape because I felt it would really show off the banding. I also made this a larger elongated teardrop so check the size carefully. As usual, the pendant is topped with the sterling silver post bail I love to use. Approximate Size: The top is 1/8” and the widest point is 1/2”. Height is just over 2 & 3/8”, not including the fitting. Thickness is 3/16”.
Care: This is a pretty hard stone (6 - 7 on the Mohs scale) and can be brittle. It will have fairly good scratch resistance but may show a tendency to crack and spall out under a sharp blow. I would recommend you not clean any pendant over a hard surface. A drop to a hard surface could be disastrous. Remember, I highly polish my pendants so they will be slippery to handle. Due to its hardness and polish, this stone can be submerged in water, but I wouldn’t for an extended period of time. I would still avoid using ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals. My recommendation for cleaning is using a damp cloth, followed by air drying, followed by using a polishing cloth.
Folklore: In general, Rhyolites are believed to facilitate change and help one deal calmly with issues and challenges resulting from change. Most importantly it helps maintain self-worth as those changes occur. Rhyolites are best known as Stones of Self Esteem.
